An American actor in Tokyo struggles to find purpose until he lands an unusual gig: working for a Japanese 'rental family' agency, playing stand-in roles for strangers. As he immerses himself in his clients' worlds, he begins to form genuine bonds that blur the lines between performance and reality.

In the coastal region of Shonan, a young man enlists the help of a eccentric local pet detective to search for his missing pet cat. When the man is unable to pay for the detective's help, he joins the unusual agency to pay off the debt.

Minoru falls ill with a heart ailment, but luckily finds a donor and undergoes a transplant. However, after he has married his co-worker and had a child, he discovers that the blood infusion received during his transplant was contaminated with HIV.

A man named Isaac (Isaku) struggles with guilt following a physical altercation that left another man in a vegetative state. A vision of Jesus appears before him, telling him to return home and seek forgiveness from the family of the unconscious man. He meets the sister of the man, who now struggles to take care of both the boy and her mother by selling her body. The realizations of cascading effects of his sin only intensify his feelings of guilt, and complicate his path toward atonement.

The writer and college professor, Alexandre Fayard, researches and gives lectures about the gruesome literary work of the mysterious Japanese writer Shundei Oe, considered by him to be the master of manipulation.
