Known for Production
Stephen L’Heureux is a film and television producer, writer and entertainment executive whose career spans more than three decades, from his earliest experiences on movie sets to developing, producing and overseeing major studio and independent productions. L’Heureux began his career at ground level, appearing as an extra in films including Scent of a Woman and School Ties. On School Ties, he also began working behind the camera, an experience that brought him into the orbit of producer and studio executive Sherry Lansing and helped set the course for his career in production and development. He subsequently worked for Stanley Kubrick as a director’s apprentice during the filmmaker’s final years, including on Eyes Wide Shut and Kubrick’s development of A.I. Artificial Intelligence. The experience gave L’Heureux an extraordinary education in filmmaking, story development and the exacting process through which Kubrick constructed his movies. L’Heureux later worked in development with Sydney Pollack at Mirage Enterprises during a period that encompassed films including The Talented Mr. Ripley, Iris, The Interpreter, Cold Mountain, Michael Clayton and The Reader. He went on to become a senior production executive at Clint Eastwood’s Malpaso Productions, working directly with Eastwood during one of the most prolific periods of the filmmaker’s career. His production-executive credits from that era include Flags of Our Fathers, Letters from Iwo Jima, Changeling, Gran Torino, Invictus, Hereafter and J. Edgar. At the same time, L’Heureux built an independent producing career of his own. His credits include State’s Evidence, Outside Sales, Loveless in Los Angeles, Uncross the Stars and the supernatural thriller 100 Feet. In 2014, he produced Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller’s Sin City: A Dame to Kill For, starring Mickey Rourke, Josh Brolin, Jessica Alba, Rosario Dawson, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Eva Green. He subsequently executive produced films including Curve, Precious Cargo and the action-horror film Redcon-1. Through Solipsist Films, L’Heureux has continued to acquire, develop, package and produce film and television projects, frequently working with established intellectual property, graphic novels, books and franchise material. His development slate has included projects such as Undying Love, Yasuke, Painkiller Jane, Kung Fu, Metro 2033 and a television incarnation of Sin City, alongside numerous original features and series. Outside traditional filmmaking, L’Heureux was also a founding partner of the technology company Swapit.com during the first Internet boom, giving him experience building and operating a company beyond the entertainment business. Across his career, L’Heureux has worked alongside filmmakers including Stanley Kubrick, Sydney Pollack and Clint Eastwood while building a body of work that crosses studio pictures, independent filmmaking, genre cinema and long-form development. His career has evolved from learning filmmaking firsthand on sets to developing and overseeing major motion pictures and ultimately creating and producing projects through his own company.
