The story concerns the efforts of the emperor to obtain the Dragon Sabre and it's companion magic sword so the "martial world" will be forced to respect him. He enlists a bad guy who plots a massacre of the Mongolians to blamed on the "Ming cult" so that the Mongolian hero played by Ti Lung will attack and steal the sabre from the cult and then give it to the bad guy who has in the meantime stolen a powerful magic sutra from Budhhist nuns, kidnapped a Mongolian Princess and is trying to become a Yin/Yang fighter which looks like ... wait, none of this makes much sense, but that's the film. Derek Yee plays the hero of the Ming cult who is trying to find out who is framing the cult for the massacre.

Chiao Tzu Wei hires a killer under the premise that the local government (run by the local kung fu school) is corrupt and extorting the people of the town. The killer happens to be Hsieh Chun (aka Hsiao Hu) who left town ten years ago. (When Hsieh Chun opens up a suitcase full of knives, you know that there is going to be tons of killing!). Thinking that the local kung fu school is bad, he goes over there to fight them. There is some reuniting of lost friends and some love between two of them. The bad guys are constantly double crossing everyone and this leads to total mayhem and carnage. The final fight scene (which is actually several fight scenes going from one to the next) is incredible, especially the blood soaked finale between the evil Japanese leader of the opium ring and the two brothers.

Soon-to-be legendary director Chu Yuan had just joined the Shaw Brothers when he helmed this thriller of bickering bandits. Audiences loved watching three pairs of cunning male and female crooks trying to steal a million gold taels from the Fu Lai Treasury House...not knowing that one of them is actually an undercover hero. Even without him, there's no honor amongst thieves, so the double-crosses and deadly duels come fast and furious, all choreographed by Hsu Erh-niu.

Chor Yuen was Gu Long before he started filming Gu Long. The director's first wuxia film, made at Shaws' rival Cathay, finds him relishing in a mode of expression that would later become the signature style of the 'martial-arts suspense thriller' mini-genre. Chor grafts the quasi-psychological stylishness of his Cantonese melodrama onto this actioner, laying on thick the atmosphere by dialling up the fog machine and unleashing the colours from his camera's palette. He also stages his fights in modern dance-like choreography, with moves that are more graceful than ferocious and paused poses that are longer on expressive narcissism than continuity of action. Cold Blade is the quiet beginning of an aesthetic.

Wise Wives and Foolish Husbands

Rich heir Tommy Wu has a circle of friends at university: Chow Hoi-kit and Kong Fan who both come from a poor background, Wong Ying whom Chow secretly admires, and Mary who goes out with Kong over the protests of her rich father. Tommy hangs out with the gangster Ah Kam, gambling and dancing days and nights away.

Inside a café, on Christmas Eve. Chim Kei meets an enigmatic woman named Mimi Wong who introduces herself as the daughter of an upper-crust family. But the infatuated writer is struck by a spasm of sorrow when he later sees Mimi make her appearance as a taxi-dancer at a party. The lovers are reconciled by the story of her plight told by her sister Annie. However, Mimi goes missing on the engagement day. By a stroke of luck, Chim runs into the elusive woman again and finds out how she was forced into prostitution by her drug-addict husband, his childhood best friend and benefactor Chan Hung-kit. Chim leaves dejectedly, and has since been idling his days away. The frail Mimi confesses her love for Chim on her deathbed, and from not far away, Chan has ended his own life.

One stormy night, a poor music student (Patrick Tse) meets a famous dancer (Josephine Siao). In one night, he composes for her the musical of her dreams: A Purple Stormy Night. The management of her dance company is divided on the musical, but the dancer manages to dispel all their doubts and the musical becomes a great success. The student and the dancer fall in love, but there is a shadow side to happiness: corrupted by success, the next musical they make is superficial. "Purple Night" shows the dangerous influence commerce can have on artistic integrity and is also about themes such as love and friendship, the relationship between art and life and the conflict between rich and poor.

But the treasure is stolen by a cat burglar a day before the new owner claims it. Wong’s daughter Ka-yuk (Josephine Siao) suggests replacing it with a fake one. Now they need to steal the fake one before their ruse is discovered.

Working as a telephone operator on the nightshift, David Lau received some calls from a woman for a David and agrees to a blind date. Jennie and Lau take a stroll along the beach. Jennie suddenly hurls herself into the sea in a run. Five years ago, when Jennie was having a heart-to-heart talk with her fiance David Wong on the beach, her neglected brother ran off to the sea and drowned himself. Suffering from a nervous breakdown ever since, Jennie was devasted by the departure of her fiance to America. The hopes Jennie's parents are pinning on the new David to boost their daughter's recovery are merely wishes.

Yu Sung Chi was separated from his wife and young daughter during the war. When he fled with his eldest daughter Yu pak Mei, he adopted the orphan Ho Chi Kwong. He cultivates light and becomes talented, and even wants to marry roses to Kwong. When Kwong was preparing to open a branch factory, he fell in love with his secretary Yu Bik Lin, and later decided to marry Lin. Mei wanted Lin to leave Kwong, Lin wanted Kwong's future, left a letter and left, but Kwong published a newspaper to search for her, but to no avail. On the day of Kwong and Mei's engagement, they received news from Lin. Kwong resolutely gave up everything to be with Lin. Chuk Tai-ming elopes to Hong Kong with Shum Tsui-hung in defiance of his father but soon succumbs to harsh conditions and ill health. Shum becomes a courtesan to fulfil Tai-ming's last wish of funding his younger brother Chi-ming's studies in Australia, while creating the false impression that she is a rich widow. Chi-ming returns in summer and a chance encounter in the nightclub evolves into a budding romance. Tormented by a love doomed from the start, Shum pretends to despise the poor suitor. The rejection is taken hard by Chi-ming, who snubs the woman in public. Shum plunges into despair, taking gravely ill. Her lawyer Lee Chung-ling finally breaks the silence, making Chi-ming attuned to the woman's unspoken suffering after she's been laid to rest.

Lawyer Fan Kam-man believes that his wife Chun Yuen-yung perished in a plane crash three years ago and walks down the aisle again with Yan Bik-kei. The Diary of a Husband serves as an illustration for the arrival of the white-collar economy, in which the extended family is replaced by the smaller nuclear family. It is a story about four pals who work at the same office, which, like other white-collar workplaces, has become the men's primary site of life, where livings are made and friendships fostered. Meanwhile, their wives have fostered something of their own—a brigade to catch cheating husbands. Much comedy is then generated by the cat-and-mouse game between the men and the women...The battle line drawn here between the sexes remains for years, to the extent that this very same story has been retold many times in Hong Kong films, including Men Suddenly in Black, the 2003 Pang Ho-cheung film with a similar Chinese title.

The creative person torn between ideals and reality is one of Chor Yuen's favourite characters in his 1960s films. Another favourite subject is the rose, not only featured in the title of several films but is also the name of the production company he formed with his future wife, Nam Hung, who also stars in most of its productions. Rose in Tears is in fact the company's inaugural project. The story features two painters, one famous and the other struggling but both infatuated with the same delicate rose of a woman, negotiating their ways through art, commerce and love. With this heart-tugging story, Chor finds a vehicle for his baroque impulses, relishing in lavish images and over-the-top emotions.

Poor teacher Chan Chi-hong, his wife Lee Yuk-mei and their five children survive on his meagre pay. When he is laid off by two schools in a row, the family runs into difficulties. He vows to be a dutiful father and tries his best to overcome their adversities. His novel is finally published and sells well. Through thick and thin, the family at last sees the light at the end of the tunnel.

Chor Yuen started his directorial career with a bang. From its very first image, The Natural Son establishes Chor as a filmmaker of stylistic flourish, which would be sustained in various forms throughout his long tenure.
